Comparison
Which One is More Profitable — Layer or Broiler Poultry Farming?
A side-by-side on layers vs broilers. Layers: 5–6 month maturity, 7–8 months of ~1 egg/day per bird, selling spent hens as meat, ready market from restaurants, hotels and paint/emulsion industries. Broilers: fast-growing hybrids, meat turnover in weeks, ad-libitum feeding, export potential — but fragile and labour-intensive. Decision factors on capital, time, labour.
Productivity
How to Boost Egg Production & Profit in Layer Farming
The top three issues — disease, suboptimal management, and decreased egg production. How clean water and palatable feed drive intake, why lighting management matters (dim lights = lost eggs, too much light = premature maturity and small eggs), and how phytogenic feed additives (thymol, carvacrol, eugenol from thyme/oregano/clove) support gut health. Layer efficiency — 310 eggs/72 weeks in 1998 → 320 today.
Housing
Environmentally Controlled Poultry Shed / House Farming
A practical guide — blueprint for 21 chickens/m², land area > 80,000 sq ft for 30,000 broilers, floor > 15 cm, wood-shaving litter, efficient ventilation for temperature control, windows for sunlight and air, brooders for cold seasons, and feeding density (3+ kg feed per bird over 5–6 weeks). Includes a checklist of key variables: temperature, humidity, nutrient density, biomass, and floor-area heat distribution.
Equipment
Do You Know the Benefits of Poultry Battery Cages?
Seven benefits of modern battery cages — healthier birds (manure falls through wire floor, reducing disease), higher egg output (~60% of eggs in mayonnaise, cakes, sandwiches come from battery cages), qualitative feeding via overhead nipple systems, lower labour cost with organised rows, minimal feed spillage, high capacity (60–128 birds per A-type unit), and durable galvanised-wire construction suitable for layers, breeders and point-of-lay birds.
Biosecurity
How to Prevent Newcastle Disease (NDV)
Exotic Newcastle Disease (NDV) is one of the most common and contagious poultry diseases — spreading through air, water, feed, contact and contaminated equipment. A farmer's prevention checklist: daily sweeping and disinfection; 2 sq ft per bird housing with cemented floor and wood-shaving bedding; 2–3 week isolation for new birds after clean-out; self-imposed neighbourhood quarantine on suspicion; and AVIVAX 1-2 vaccine (thermo-stable, eight weeks at room temperature).

Eggs as an Anti-Cancer and Anti-Inflammatory Superfood

Egg proteins and peptides have been reported to induce apoptosis in cancer cells, protect against DNA damage, decrease cancer-cell invasion ability, and exhibit cytotoxic and antimutagenic activity. Long flat roofs with southern exposure make poultry houses ideal for solar — and solar costs dropped from $76.67/watt (1977) to $0.36/watt (2014).

10 Tips for Reducing Litter Moisture
Dry litter keeps broilers healthy, controls ammonia and minimises breast blisters and hock burns. Ten prevention-first tips — remove caking between flocks, keep house warm (above 32°C ideal), run fans between flocks and during pre-heat, eliminate leaks, manage drinkers and water pressure, monitor 50–60% RH, exploit day/night temperature difference, and make bold 30-second timer adjustments — never just 10–20 seconds.
Biosecurity
Common Poultry Diseases and Prevention Methods
A farmer's reference on three high-impact poultry diseases. Avian Influenza (LPAI vs HPAI — 1g of contaminated manure can infect 1M birds). Exotic Newcastle Disease (END — up to 100% mortality in unvaccinated flocks, survives warm humid environments for weeks). Pullorum-Typhoid (hen-to-hatchling through the egg — NPIP's flagship disease). How each spreads, clinical signs and practical prevention for each.
Biosecurity
How to Properly Implement Poultry Farm Biosecurity Plans
HACCP-based planning, cleaning-before-disinfection, and choosing the right disinfectant (broad-spectrum isn't the answer). Plus Manon Racicot's Quebec-farm studies on 24 farms and 800+ visits — overall compliance of just 35%, but 13× higher when entrance designs make the right behaviour easy, and 5–9× higher with physical barriers over painted lines. Why biosecurity is a value, not a priority.

How to Choose Good Feed for Your Poultry
Feed makes up the major cost of production. A practical selection guide — protein (18–20% in starter/grower), carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. Feed forms (crumbles, pellets, mash). Core ingredients — corn and soybean meal, balancers and concentrates, salt (0.2–0.5%), supplemental lipids, yellow pigmentation from xanthophyll, non-nutritive additives and fish oil (a reliable Vitamin A and D source).
Getting Started
How to Start a Layer Farm for Egg Production
Commercial layer farming — hens start laying at 18–19 weeks, continue to 72–78 weeks, producing ~1 kg of eggs per 2.25 kg feed. White vs Brown egg breeds — Isa White, Hi Sex White, Bovanch White vs Isa Brown, Hi Line Brown, Bablona Tetro. Battery cages, capital planning, staged feeding (2% calcium for 2 weeks, 8-week starter), Marek/Gamboro/Salmonella vaccination, and peak laying between 26–30 weeks with up to 325 eggs/year.
