Major allocations
The Union Budget 2026 announces significant government investments in India's livestock, dairy, and poultry sectors:
- Rs 3,880 crore programme (2024-25 and 2025-26) for vaccination drives against Foot and Mouth Disease and Brucellosis
- Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF) extended to March 31, 2026 with Rs 29,610 crore total outlay
- Animal Health Institute — Rs 100 crore
- Small Livestock Institute — Rs 50 crore
- Breed Improvement Institute — Rs 50 crore
Veterinary workforce expansion
The budget proposes "scaling up capacity by over 20,000 professionals through a loan-linked capital subsidy support scheme" for veterinary education and para-veterinary colleges.
Industry context
The livestock sector now accounts for nearly 16% of farm income and grows at approximately 7% annually, outpacing overall agricultural growth.
