Allied activities driving growth
According to the Economic Survey 2026, India's agricultural growth is increasingly driven by allied activities — livestock, poultry, fisheries, and horticulture — rather than traditional crop production alone.
- Agriculture and allied activities grew at 4.4% annually over five years
- Livestock output expanded at 7.1%; fishing and aquaculture at 8.8%
- Livestock and poultry gross value added rose 195% between FY15–FY24
- Fish production increased over 140% between 2014–2025
Record production numbers
Foodgrain production reached 3,577.3 lakh metric tonnes in 2024–25. Horticulture production hit 36.2 crore tonnes, surpassing foodgrains.
India ranks as "the world's largest producer of dry onions" and "second globally in the production of fruits, vegetables and potatoes."
Future agricultural growth will stem from diversification, value addition and allied activities rather than volume alone.— Economic Survey 2026
